Talking colour/Talking pattern (Mahi Bharadwaj)
During our group activity, my inspiration came from Borough Market. Unlike the other locations we visited, the market’s vibrant atmosphere immediately captured my attention. The stalls were overflowing with colour — rich greens from fresh produce, deep reds and purples from fruits, and warm golden tones from lights reflecting off polished metal and glass. Every small detail, from the ornate lettering on shop signs to the decorative displays, created a sense of liveliness and abundance.
What fascinated me most was the contrast between the everyday nature of the market and its almost opulent aesthetic. The textures of fruits, the glimmer of bottled oils, and the reflective surfaces of glasses and jars reminded me of jewels displayed in a treasure chest. This luxurious yet organic feel became the foundation for my creative response.
I began experimenting with fluid materials and glossy paints to capture the sense of richness I experienced. The idea of bubbles — delicate, transparent, and fleeting — became a metaphor for the market’s energy: constantly shifting, yet full of light and colour. I combined these bubble-like forms with floral motifs to reflect both the natural and the decorative aspects of what I saw.
Through this process, I developed a deeper appreciation for how ordinary spaces can evoke luxury through texture and detail. My final work transforms the visual chaos of Borough Market into a dreamlike composition that celebrates beauty in the everyday.intro to: submission
